I really wish they would have revival. One current author that I really love is Susannah Kearsley. Though not classically gothic she mixes modern sensibilities with gothic elements some history and otherworldliness. When I start one of her books I know I won't be doing anything but reading in the next day or two.

I adore the classic gothics! So much so, that the first novel I ever wrote (still unpubbed) was a gothic, a la Victorida Holt, Daphne DuMaurier, Phyllis Whitney, Charlotte Bronte, et. al. My favorite of all time is Master of Blacktower by Barbara Michaels. I wonder if the market for these fabulous, atmospheric novels will ever revive?

I have a few cassettes of her books that I found on Ebay, but i haven't listened to them in a while. I do enjoy listening to books, especially in the car or cleaning house.

I love Victoria Holt books, too, and haven't read one in years, but I have a collection. A few times, I've listened to her stories on audio while on a cross-country drive--one was Mistress of Mellyn. Your post encourages me to dust off one of those stories and reread it because she was truly gifted and a master writer.

Sadly, I've never read any of these gothics. Life can be dreary enough in Central New Jersey. I have been to Cornwall, however, and it is every bit as marvelously enchanting as you say. Going to Land's End is something everyone ought to do at least once...for it truly looks like the end of the world. And to someone living in England before jet planes, Land's End would be the end of the world. It haunts me. And I did write a book about it.

Bride of Pendorric, I haven't read that in years. Looks like there's another trip to the library for me. I just picked up a copy of the Crystal Cave at the big book store on the highway. I've read all of Stewart's romantic suspenses several times over but I haven't read any of her Arthurian fantasies. I downloaded a sample of Cave on my iphone and find it thoroughly engrossing. Not my usual fare. We'll see.

Misstress of Mellyn was one of my favorites. i also liked her Bride of pendorric. Another classic is Phyllis A. Whitney's Thunder Heights. And of course others by this author. And Mary Stewart is another favorite!

I hadn't either. I always pick up a Mary Stewart during each winter, but I haven't read Holt in a few. I'm glad a did.
